If you already hold a degree or a relevant diploma, you may not need to start ACCA from the very first paper. ACCA can award exemptions for prior learning that matches its syllabus. Here is how it works for Zimbabwean graduates.

While prior graduates from your university may have received specific exemptions, your own eligibility will depend on the exact year you graduated, the specific modules you passed, and the official accreditation status of your degree program at that time.

How Many Exemptions Can You Get?

Graduates can be awarded up to nine exemptions, covering exams across the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels. Crucially, no exemptions are available for the Strategic Professional exams, so every ACCA student sits those.

The Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels comprise the following papers:

• Applied Knowledge: Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), Financial Accounting (FA).
• Applied Skills: Corporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), Financial Management (FM).

If you are awarded the maximum of nine exemptions, you will skip all of these papers and transition directly into the Strategic Professional level. This level consists of two compulsory papers: Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR): and a selection of optional papers: such as Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX), and Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA).

Typical Exemption Paths for Zimbabwean University Graduates

Zimbabwe has several prominent universities offering accounting and business degrees. ACCA has reviewed many of these programs and established standard exemption pathways. Below is an overview of what graduates from major local institutions can typically expect:

Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) Graduates

Graduates who hold a fully accredited Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) degree from institutions such as the University of Zimbabwe (UZ), Midlands State University (MSU), the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Africa University (AU), Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), or Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) are often eligible for the maximum nine exemptions.

This pathway allows these graduates to bypass the entire Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels, provided they passed all their core accounting, auditing, taxation and financial management modules with strong grades.

General Business, Finance or Economics Graduates

If you hold a degree that only partly overlaps with the accounting syllabus: such as a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance, a Bachelor of Business Studies, or a BSc in Economics: you will typically receive fewer exemptions.

For instance, a finance graduate might be exempted from:

• Business and Technology (BT)
• Management Accounting (MA)
• Financial Accounting (FA)
• Financial Management (FM)

However, they will likely need to sit papers such as Taxation (TX), Audit and Assurance (AA), and Corporate and Business Law (LW).

Non-Related Degree Holders and School Leavers

If you hold a degree in a non-business discipline: such as engineering, science, or the humanities: you will typically receive no exemptions. In this case, you will begin your ACCA journey at the very beginning.

For students starting with no exemptions, or for school leavers who do not meet the minimum entry requirements for the main ACCA qualification, the entry point is the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) route.

The ACCA qualification is designed cumulatively. The advanced papers build directly on the concepts tested at the Skills level.

The Strategic Professional exams do not re-teach basic concepts; they expect you to apply them immediately to complex business scenarios.
