ACCA and CIMA are both globally respected accounting qualifications, and the question we hear most often is simply: which one is right for me? The honest answer is that neither is "better", they point at different careers. Here is how to choose.
Heads up: Onilaz is an independent tutoring provider and is not affiliated with, or approved by, ACCA or CIMA. Syllabus and membership rules are set by each body. Confirm details on accaglobal.com and cimaglobal.com.
The core difference
- ACCA leans towards financial accounting, audit, tax and compliance. It is the classic route to becoming a chartered certified accountant, strong for public practice and audit-focused roles.
- CIMA leans towards management accounting, business strategy and decision-making. It is built for finance roles inside businesses: budgeting, performance, and supporting leadership decisions.
A useful shorthand: ACCA points more at the accountant's skill set, CIMA more at the business partner's.
Where each one leads
- ACCA suits audit, financial reporting, tax and treasury, and forensic or practice roles.
- CIMA suits management accounting, financial planning and analysis, and commercial finance roles inside companies.
Both are recognised internationally, which matters in Zimbabwe where many professionals work with diaspora and cross-border employers.
How they are structured
Both are multi-level qualifications that combine exams with a practical experience requirement before membership. ACCA currently progresses through Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional levels; CIMA progresses through Operational, Management and Strategic levels across its pillars. The exams test genuinely different skill sets, so the "harder" one really depends on where your strengths lie.
Can you do both?
Yes, and they complement each other well, with some exemptions recognised between them. Many professionals start with one and add the other later to broaden their options.
How to decide
- Picture the job, not just the letters. Do you see yourself in audit and reporting (lean ACCA) or driving decisions inside a business (lean CIMA)?
- Check entry and exemptions with each body before committing.
- Talk it through with someone who has actually sat the papers.
At Onilaz we tutor ACCA and CIMA Operational one-to-one, and we will give you an honest steer based on your goals, not a sales pitch, including telling you when something sits outside what we teach.
